A diesel engine technician from Enfield, NC, has won $100,000 by playing a Diamond 7 scratch off lottery.

Jeanette Richardson, the winner, intends to use at least some of her massive prize to pay off her car loan debt.

She was at home and had just purchased the $5 lottery ticket when she began scratching it off.

“I kept thinking I had won a hundred dollars, then a thousand. When I saw that last number in there, I could not believe my eyes. I could barely sleep that night,” said Richardson in a news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

While she has won a prize of $100,000, after taxes she will have an estimated $68,001 in actual cash. She intends to pay off bills and use the cash prize to help her family.

“I’m very happy. I have a check in my hand and I’m going right to the bank,” said Richardson.

Richardson won one of four $100,000 lottery prize winnings, yet many other prizes remain unclaimed.

“Lottery winners do tell us often that they would like to pay off their car loan or home loan,” said Chris Bushnell, Digital Communications Specialist for the North Carolina Education Lottery, in an interview with

While Richardson has stated she plans to use the money wisely, the lottery remains proactive in its approach to offering initial advice to winners.

“We recommend that winners talk with a financial expert and certainly taking care of large financial pieces of the puzzle is a sensible thing to do,” said Bushnell.

Bushnell explained that the Diamond 7 lottery helps fund special education programs as well as teachers’ salaries for Kindergarten through third grade. Additionally, it funds school construction and certain scholarships programs.
